The Best of the Best Job Search Super Sites:

Indeed Find a job based on the salary, title, and location now on Indeed. Indeed is a "job aggregator" site site that allows you to search through the postings on literally thousands of Websites at one time - more than you would probably know to search if you had the time. Sites submit their job postings to Indeed for inclusion - including the mega sites like CareerBuilder and Monster, (but NOT CraigsList), niche sites like DICE, newspaper classifieds, many other smaller job sites, plus employer Websites. Then you apply for the jobs on the sites where they originated - so watch out for privacy practices before you submit your resume. You can set up an RSS feed, or sign up for the traditional e-mail notices.

The Rest of the Best:

  • CraigsList - is the hub of job searching with jobs from small and medium-sized employers, Criagslist is organized by location. So, pick your location out of the list in the right most column of each location home page. In most of the locations covered, posting job ads is free for employers, so you will find scams and get-rich-quick schemes posted. Just ignore them. A fee is charged employers in the 11 largest cities, which tends to weed out most of the scams in those locations.
  • JobCentral - from the Direct Employers Association, it claims that 70% of their jobs are not posted anywhere else, and it's a possibility. Direct Employers is a group of employers who combined their efforts to create their own job website. The result is a big site's search and support capabilities with opportunities from the employer Web sites! You search at DirectEmployers by keyword, "time filter" (age of the job posting), source (employers and/or staffing firms). JobCentral is positioned as one of the replacements for America's Job Bank, the site consolidating all of the state employment office job postings and resumes, which had been free for employers to use. There is a Privacy Policy posted, but beware that each employer will have their own privacy practices, so be careful with your personal information.
  • Net-Temps - has both "temporary" as well as permanent job opportunities PLUS contract opportunities - a job that lasts from a few weeks to several months and can sometimes develop into a permanent position. It's a good way to pay the bills and add experience to your resume at the same time. A Privacy Policy is posted.

  • Summer Study Abroad - Searchable by program name for organizations sponsoring summer employment outside the U.S. No privacy policy is posted.
  • YouthRules - from the U.S. Department of Labor, provides the "Youth [Employment] Rules" for teenagers in the U.S.

For more information and additional resources, read The Washington Post's "Complete Guide to Internships" which offers information about what they are, how to obtain them, and how the process works.

Search Tip: If there's no category for internship opportunities in a Web job site or if you are using a search engine, test the search terms you are using. doing searchs on the keyword "intern" or "internship" (singular) often, but not always, provides more results than a search on "interns" (plural) or "internships." So, try all 3 terms to be sure.
